Acid to Acid Chloride

Common Conditions:

SOCl2

Thionyl chloride (SOCl2) is commonly used to convert carboxylic acids to acid chlorides. Conditions typically involve stirring the substrate in neat SOCl2 at reflux for several hours. Sometimes a solvent is used (ex. ACN).

(COCl)2

Oxalyl Chloride [(COCl)2] is also commonly used to convert carboxylic acids to acid chlorides. The process typically involves stirring the substrate in DCM at RT with (COCl)2 and a catalytic amount of DMF.
