Example 1

A mixture of the SM (10.0 g, 51.8 mmol), nitromethane (2 mL), and K2CO3 (3.57 g, 25.9 mmol) was stirred at RT for 2 h. The reaction mixture was quenched with H2O and extracted with EtOAc (2 x 100 mL). The combined organics were washed with H2O (2 x 50 mL), brine (20 mL), dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated to provide the product as a yellow gum which was used in the next step without further purification.
