Example 1
A mixture of the SM (1.1 g, 2.5 mmol) and conc. HCl (30 mL) was stirred at RT for 30 min. The mixture was cooled to 0 C and NaNO2 (190 mg, 2.75 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred at 0 C for 15 min, after which time was slowly added a solution of KI (4.2 g, 25 mmol) in H2O (100 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at RT for 16 h. After concentration, the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (1:1 PE/EtOAc) to provide the product as a brown solid. [550 mg, 49%]
