Example 1

A mixture of the SM (1.9 g, 4.00 mmol) and LiCl (845 mg, 20.0 mmol) in HMPA (12 mL) was stirred at RT for 1 h. The mixture was diluted with EtOAc, washed with brine (4x), dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (0-30% EtOAc/hexane) to provide the product as an anomeric mixture as a syrup (800 mg of the faster moving isomer, 300 mg of the slower moving one). [1.1 g, 76%]
